‘Is something going on between you and MacKenzie?’ Lily asked, tucking a strand of her shiny hair behind her ear.

Was it that obvious? I thought we’d been really discreet.

‘No. What makes you say that?’

I tried to paste a puzzled expression on my face. Judging by Lily’s response, I wasn’t sure I succeeded.

‘I’ve seen the way the two of you look at each other. You can’t keep your eyes off each other. There’s definitely a spark…’ Lily let her sentence trail off.

I wanted to whoop with joy. This was a first for me. My previous boyfriends never got the opportunity to choose between us. I’d met them when I wasn’t with Lily. She had loads of friends, and her name was always on the guest list. More often than not, I was allowed to tag along so the host didn’t appear rude by not inviting me. I knew my presence was surplus to requirement. And that hurt. She was a better version of me in every conceivable way. Although MacKenzie didn’t think so. I was over the moon, but I had to keep up the pretence.

‘So nothing’s going on then?’ Lily crossed her arms over her chest and studied my face. She seemed a bit put out if you asked me, which felt good, but I couldn’t afford to let my pleasure show through.

‘Give it a rest, Lily. What are you going to accuse me of next?’

I threw the palms of my hands up, doing my best to act indignant.

‘You might want to fix your lipstick before we go on stage,’ Lily replied.

I sat down on the stool just as MacKenzie walked into the dressing room. Our eyes met in the mirror, and I nearly burst out laughing, but I managed to hold it in. He looked like The Joker in the Batman films. I tore my eyes away from him and fixed them on my own face. There was a bright red smudge circling my mouth, and my lipstick hadn’t looked like that when I’d gone out for a cigarette. No wonder Lily was suspicious.

Lily’s eyes flicked from MacKenzie to me several times before she spoke.

‘So are you still going to try and convince me that it’s a figment of my imagination that something’s going on between the two of you?’

Lily tilted her head to one side and glared at me.

I could see she was waiting for an answer, but I couldn’t think of anything to say. My jaw locked. Silence filled the air around us. MacKenzie and I exchanged a glance, but both of us refused to comment. Unspoken words hung between us.

Lily looked at us in turn. I could see her frustration growing by the minute. A smile was threatening to spread my lips widely. I couldn’t let it. I stared at my sister. Stony-faced. Defiant. Challenging.

‘Give me some credit. I’m not that stupid, Daisy.’

There was anger in her voice. It was stamped into every word. I thought she’d tone it down as MacKenzie was in the room. It wouldn’t do to let her halo slip while there were witnesses around.
